Arsenal's Struggles Continue as Birmingham Denies Victory in Draw
An equalizer from Olivia Smith saved Arsenal from defeat, but their 1-1 draw at home against Birmingham did little to ease the uncertainty surrounding coach Renée Slegers.
The final whistle was met with boos from the Emirates crowd, as Arsenal remains stuck on six points after six matches—marking a dismal five-game winless streak, the longest in their WSL history. Currently sitting eighth in the table, they trail leaders Manchester City by nine points, with City having played one fewer match.
Birmingham struck first right after the break, with Océane Hurtré calmly tapping in after a solo run from the halfway line that went unchallenged. Arsenal had their chances in the first half, including a close call when Alessia Russo hit the woodwork with a diving header, while goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley was kept busy at the other end.
“I felt we didn’t create enough in the first half,” Slegers admitted. “The second half was a different story, but we allowed Hurtré to break through on a fast counter, and we didn’t defend that well.”
In the 66th minute, Smith delivered a stunning equalizer, curling a shot from outside the box that brought Arsenal level. However, they couldn’t find the decisive goal to relieve the mounting pressure on Slegers, as Birmingham's Baggaley continued to thwart their attempts.
“We’ve been in this situation too many times this season,” Slegers reflected, acknowledging her team's struggle to secure victories. Looking ahead, Arsenal faces a vital north London derby against Tottenham, who will be coming off a match against Chelsea.
Slegers remains optimistic: “Every game is a new chance. It’s great that we keep pushing through setbacks, which we’ve shown we can do.”
She added, “We need to put ourselves in better positions earlier in the game so we aren’t always fighting back. It drains energy from the team, but the players showed great urgency and desire in the second half.”
Despite the disappointment echoing around the stadium, Smith praised the loyal home support: “They always bring fantastic energy, and we’re grateful to have them with us. It’s frustrating not to deliver the result they deserve, but their support means a lot.”
