Bruno Fernandes Stands Firm Behind Ronaldo Amid Controversy
Bruno Fernandes is reaffirming that Cristiano Ronaldo is still the ultimate symbol of the Portugal national team, even after his recent exit from the squad. This statement comes on the heels of Ronaldo leaving the team camp over a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus regarding his starting position against Denmark.
Portugal triumphed 4-2 in that Nations League match without Ronaldo, but questions about his international future loom large. Fernandes, who plays for Manchester United, urged fans to rally together during this tumultuous time, noting the split opinions surrounding Ronaldo's controversial decision.
"I’ve spoken with Cristiano, and I firmly believe that he will always be the greatest symbol of our national team and our football," Fernandes told reporters on Saturday. "His legacy extends beyond Portugal, and he holds a special place in the hearts of all of us. It’s critical that we cease any divisions and stand united."
He emphasized that the national squad remains cohesive, irrespective of outside noise. "We’re here to represent our country, and we must respect all perspectives. Cristiano deserves admiration from everyone, whether they’re his biggest fans or not."
Portugal recently secured a 2-1 victory against Norway, with Ronaldo on the bench, before their win in Copenhagen following his departure. Fernandes captained the team in those matches, and now they are gearing up to face Norway again in Porto on Sunday.
Coach Jorge Jesus, who previously managed Ronaldo at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, echoed similar sentiments, labeling the 41-year-old a "symbol of Portugal." He stressed the need to focus on the upcoming match against Norway, which he considers a significant challenge. "Right now, my priority is the team and preparing for one of Europe’s top five teams," said the 72-year-old manager.
