Celtic's Dermot Desmond Targeted by Fans During Golf Protest

Celtic's Dermot Desmond Targeted by Fans During Golf Protest
Celtic's principal shareholder Dermot Desmond found himself at the center of an unexpected protest while attending the Alfred Dunhill Links golf tournament at St Andrews. During the pro-am event, fans threw tennis balls adorned with his crossed-out face onto the 15th hole, showcasing their frustration at the club's lack of progress. The 76-year-old Desmond was quickly escorted off the course by security as the protest escalated. The Celtic Fans Collective, who organized the demonstration, released a statement on X, sharing images and videos of the incident and voicing their call for changes at the club's leadership. In their statement, they expressed, "Dermot Desmond has essentially been allowed to run Celtic Football Club whilst using his wealth to hide from supporters and accountability. Fans took the chance today to send a message that this arrangement cannot continue." Later that evening, Celtic responded with a strong statement condemning the “premeditated action” that they claimed brought shame to the club. They emphasized that while they support peaceful protest, the events at St Andrews marked a troubling escalation. The club declared, “Celtic Football Club has never sought to prevent supporters from expressing criticism... What occurred at St Andrews represents a significant and unacceptable escalation. Those responsible have brought shame upon the name of Celtic Football Club.” Celtic also distanced themselves from the Fans Collective, stating that they no longer believe it represents the wider supporter base. They affirmed their commitment to protect employees, directors, shareholders, and supporters, insisting that the club's reputation is paramount. On the pitch, Celtic is experiencing a challenging phase. After clinching the Premiership title last season, they currently sit atop the league, just two points ahead of rivals Rangers. However, the team has struggled recently, losing their last three matches, including two to Rangers and a 3-1 defeat against Ferencvaros in their Europa League opener.
