Cesar Azpilicueta Reflects on His Chelsea Journey and Embraces Life After Football
Cesar Azpilicueta has etched his name in Chelsea's history, clocking up an impressive 508 appearances over 11 years, placing him sixth on the club's all-time list. Now retired, Azpilicueta reflects on his remarkable journey, emphasizing how his commitment to education and meticulous nature shaped his career at the top level. One memorable anecdote captures his dedication perfectly: before Chelsea's triumphant Champions League final in 2021, he skipped his usual pre-match nap to hit the books instead. His studies for an MBA from the Berlin School of Business and Innovation helped him channel his focus away from the pre-match jitters in Porto. Later that evening, he lifted the Champions League trophy, having led Chelsea to a stunning victory over Manchester City. In an interview with BBC Sport, Azpilicueta shared, "When I was young, my parents encouraged me to prioritize my education. I wasn’t a pro until I turned 17, so academics always mattered to me. The pandemic gave me a chance to explore courses, and while I didn’t think it was the end of my playing days, it certainly helped me improve myself." Speaking at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, where he collected a diploma in global football sport directorship, he joked about feeling a bit out of place. This accomplishment is just one of many, including a prestigious diploma from Harvard Business School. When asked about a potential future as a sporting director, the 37-year-old responded with a thoughtful "maybe," although he admitted that he’s not quite ready to jump back into football just yet. After years of relentless travel and competition, he’s now focused on enjoying a break with his family and indulging in a few rounds of golf. Reflecting on his decision to retire, he said, "I could still play, but I didn’t have the energy to commit to a whole season. Now, my priority is my family and enjoying life. It’s a refreshing change after 20 years of constant hustle." Azpilicueta's career kicked off at his hometown club Osasuna, then took him to Marseille, where he picked up French. But it was his move to Chelsea in 2012 that truly transformed his life. Completing his latest educational course reinforces Azpilicueta’s relentless thirst for knowledge and self-betterment. Arriving at Chelsea as a relatively low-profile £7 million signing, he had to carve out his path among established stars like John Terry and Frank Lampard. "I started as a winger and evolved through various positions. I wasn’t a marquee signing, so I had to earn my place, adapting to different managers and roles," he explained. "At Chelsea, ambition is palpable. Every game is a must-win, and every trophy matters. That culture pushed me to my limits, and when I left, I knew I had given everything to the club." Azpilicueta also credited his off-pitch education for his development as a leader. It empowered him during the Covid-19 pandemic, enabling him to advocate for Premier League players and keep the club thriving through challenging times. His crowning moment, of course, was that unforgettable Champions League win in 2021. Having succeeded legends like Terry and Gary Cahill as captain, Azpilicueta ranks among the club’s all-time great leaders. Yet, since departing Chelsea in 2023, he hasn’t returned to Stamford Bridge. He was part of a significant exodus following the club’s change in ownership, but his love for Chelsea remains. "I left Chelsea, but it will always hold a special place in my heart. I follow their games and hope they find their way back to the top," he said. Azpilicueta is optimistic about the club’s future under current captain Reece James and manager Xabi Alonso. He believes the team can regain its competitive edge and bring joy back to the fans. When asked about a potential return to Stamford Bridge, he responded with humility, "I don’t know about that. I will come back one day, but not in my boots."
