Cuthbert Shines as Scotland Seizes 2-0 Victory Over Czech Republic
Erin Cuthbert couldn't hide her joy as she stepped onto the field for the first time this season, playing a key role in Scotland's solid 2-0 victory against the Czech Republic.
With this win in the Women’s World Cup round-one play-off, Scotland is poised for a strong showing in the return leg on Tuesday in Paisley, where they could face Sweden should they advance.
The Chelsea captain, aged 28, had yet to play for her club this season due to a knee injury, but she made her comeback as a substitute in Pardubice. Fellow substitute Claire Emslie netted the second goal after a stunning opener from captain Caroline Weir.
"It feels amazing," Cuthbert shared with BBC Scotland.
"This summer felt incredibly long. Every time I get to represent my country again after an injury, it’s something I cherish deeply."
Cuthbert expressed relief at being back on the pitch, admitting that doubts and worries about her recovery weighed heavily on her mind.
"Just thinking about whether I could return to my previous level, or if my knee would hold up, was stressful. It was a tough injury, and I spent a month on crutches and in a brace. I had to work hard to regain my strength over the summer."
Cuthbert's journey back has been nothing short of challenging.
Emslie's goal was particularly special as it marked her first since becoming a mother, with her son and mother cheering her on from the stands.
"I’m so proud of her," Cuthbert said about her teammate. "Her strength is inspiring—balancing motherhood while competing at such a high level is impressive."
The Czech Republic nearly got a penalty late in the game, but the decision was reversed. Cuthbert was left astonished when a challenge on her in the box wasn’t called as a foul.
While she celebrated the victory, Cuthbert remained cautious about the 2-0 scoreline.
"It can be a tricky lead to manage," she noted. "We know how to hurt teams when we play aggressively. For us, solid defense is just as crucial as attacking."
Scotland's first-leg success sets a promising tone for their upcoming match.
