De Zerbi Hails Bentancur's Passion in Draw Against United
Tottenham Hotspur's head coach, Roberto de Zerbi, had kind words for Rodrigo Bentancur following his sending off in the dramatic 1-1 draw against Manchester United. The Uruguayan midfielder was shown a red card after a headbutt on Luke Shaw during a tense moment in the 78th minute, while Spurs were trailing 1-0 at Old Trafford. Even with just ten players on the pitch, Tottenham managed to pull level thanks to a late header from Dominic Solanke in the second minute of injury time. Despite still searching for their first win of the Premier League season after six matches, De Zerbi was appreciative of Bentancur's fiery spirit against United. "I kiss Rodrigo and say thanks," he remarked in the post-match conference. "In that moment, with ten players, we played with more courage and energy. For too long, Tottenham lacked that character and drive." The incident leading to the red card unfolded when Shaw, upset after a heavy challenge from Bentancur, confronted the Spurs player and pushed him off the pitch. Bentancur responded by leaning his head toward Shaw's face, prompting teammates to separate the two before referee Stuart Attwell issued the red card. De Zerbi labeled Bentancur's actions a "mistake," but he acknowledged that the reaction was the kind of intensity Tottenham needed to finish the match strong. "I kissed Bentancur in the dressing room because we need this character in our side. Football demands character," he told Sky Sports. While the late equalizer brought some relief, Spurs remain stuck in the relegation zone with just three points from six matches—a streak that marks the fourth time in club history they have begun a league season without a win in the first six games. Tottenham's attacking play has often been promising, but they’ve struggled to convert chances, with only 19th-placed Coventry scoring fewer goals than their meager total of three. However, there was a silver lining in their performance at Old Trafford, as De Zerbi noted, "Today is the first time we’ve really shown we’re a team. We played for each other, stayed in the game, and attacked and defended as one." The Italian manager expressed satisfaction with the team's spirit and character, emphasizing the need to build from this newfound resilience. Tottenham invested over £250 million to bring in ten new players over the summer, yet their slow start has prompted them to organize a warm-weather training camp in Marbella, set for Sunday, aimed at fostering team chemistry. "Now the goal is to solidify our identity as a team. We have great players, but we need to learn to play for one another, endure together, and attack together," De Zerbi stated. Next up for Spurs is a clash with newly-promoted Coventry on Monday, October 19, followed by a short trip to Chelsea the following Saturday.
