Eom Jisung: Resilience in the Face of Alleged Abuse
Eom Jisung has made a significant impact since his arrival from Gwangju FC in 2024, netting eight goals in 96 appearances for Swansea City. Following the alleged racial abuse directed at him during the recent clash against Millwall, head coach Vitor Matos believes Eom has the resilience to rise above the unfortunate incident. The Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation after Swansea's staff reported the abuse aimed at the South Korean international at The Den on Tuesday. Matos stated that Eom, who is 24, feels backed by his teammates and the club, describing the situation as 'sad for everyone, whether in football or in society.' He remarked, 'This kind of behavior still exists in our world today. We have mechanisms to combat it, and we took action by reporting the incident. Now, Eom can focus on moving forward.' The coach added that as an adult, Eom recognizes the importance of addressing such issues, saying, 'You acknowledge the situation, and you also possess the strength to carry on—that's how we should approach it.' Matos praised Millwall officials for effectively following protocol once the alleged abuse was reported during the second half of Swansea's 1-0 victory, which caused a delay of around seven minutes before play resumed. When asked about the next steps, Matos expressed hope that the investigation would conclude with a clear resolution, allowing everyone to learn from the situation, and that Millwall would take the necessary actions moving forward. In a related matter, just weeks prior, the Football Association of Ireland began investigating claims of racial abuse towards Swansea forward Adam Idah by Israeli supporters during a Nations League match. Matos discussed the incident with Idah, who is 25, noting it was a different scenario since the referee did not hear anything and could not halt the game. 'I wasn't present for that match, so it's tough for me to evaluate,' he said. 'However, I was at Millwall, and it was evident that the fourth official adhered to the protocol, which is the right approach in these situations, leading to the current investigation.' Eom, who did not feature as a substitute against Millwall, has been performing well this season and recently helped South Korea secure victory at the Asian Games. He is expected to be in the lineup when Swansea, currently sitting at the top of the Championship, faces third-placed West Ham United on Saturday at 15:00 BST.
