Gateshead Part Ways with Manager Lee Cattermole After Disappointing Start
Lee Cattermole's brief tenure at Gateshead has come to an abrupt end just four months after he took the reins. The club has parted ways with Cattermole following a string of poor performances that left them anchored at the bottom of the National League, managing only four points from their first 12 matches. The decision to let him go came after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Worthing, marking their seventh consecutive loss across all competitions. Cattermole, a former Sunderland midfielder, was brought in on a two-year contract in June but recorded only one win against 11 losses in his opening 14 games. In addition to Cattermole's departure, assistant manager Martin Smith has also exited the club, which is in dire straits both on and off the pitch. Gateshead is currently facing financial uncertainty, as players and staff are yet to receive their September wages. This comes on the heels of majority shareholder Mark Nellist resigning from the board and pulling his funding support. In a recent twist, Nellist has proposed transferring his shares to American director Stephen Paylor, pending approval from the Independent Football Regulator. However, the situation is complicated, with the club stating that Paylor can’t fund the operation alone and is waiting for outside investment that seems to be faltering. A club statement noted, "Paylor has indicated he is unable to provide funding on his own and was relying on joint investment from a third party whose initial strong interest appears to have waned." Given the current circumstances, the approval for the share transfer to Paylor seems increasingly uncertain.
