Greece vs England: Women's World Cup Playoff Showdown Begins
Good evening from the Pankritio Stadium, where the sun sets over the stunning Sea of Crete. With the mountains framing the backdrop, the England goalkeepers are going through their warm-ups as twilight settles in. The ambiance, however, feels a bit subdued, almost lacking the expected excitement of a World Cup qualifier.
Despite the match being free, the local turnout is underwhelming, and the buzz of Women's World Cup fever hasn’t quite gripped Heraklion yet. A few hundred England supporters are here, proudly waving flags from Chelsea, Birmingham City, and Derby County, creating a small but vibrant presence behind the goal.
England’s head coach, Sarina Wiegman, has made two defensive changes from the summer's qualifier against Ukraine, bringing back Leah Williamson and Alex Greenwood in place of Jess Carter and Niamh Charles.
The starting XI for Greece features Petaloti in goal, supported by defenders Giannaka, Gkouni, Markou, and Paterna. The midfield trio includes Drakogiannaki, Brame, and Moraitou, while Sarri, Papatheodorou, and Brouksair lead the attack. On the bench, Greece has a mix of players ready to step in.
England lines up with Hampton as goalkeeper, backed by Le Tissier, Williamson, Morgan, and Greenwood in defense. The midfield boasts Stanway, Walsh, and Blindkilde Brown, with Hemp, Russo, and James forming the forward trio. A strong bench includes Toone and other talents eager to make an impact.
Referee Martina Molinaro from Italy will oversee the match, which carries significant weight for England. It's hard to believe that the last time they missed out on World Cup qualification was back in 2003 when they faced a tough group, including the likes of Germany. This time, they are determined to avoid such a fate.
Wiegman has praised Ella Toone for her positive mindset after initially being left out of the squad. An injury to Lucy Bronze created an opportunity for Toone, who quickly adjusted her training plans in Spain to make the trip to Greece.
With 69 caps and 24 goals to her name, including one in last year's Euro final, Toone is a key player. Wiegman had initially expressed disappointment in her performance levels but was impressed by Toone's determination to come back stronger. After a solid display in Manchester United's victory over Liverpool, Toone stated, "It's about me now. I’ve got to keep working hard and use it as fuel to come back even better."
Wiegman remarked on Toone's response, saying, "Yes, very much. It was a hard call, but she took it well. She was disappointed, but her first thought was to bounce back. She’s surrounded by great support."
As the match approaches, the stakes couldn't be higher. England's path to Brazil next summer hinges on overcoming Greece, followed by a potential clash against either Slovakia or Ukraine. With ranking disparities at play—59th vs. 4th—England is favored, but the playoffs can be unpredictable.
Kick-off is set for 5:30 PM BST, and the anticipation is palpable.
