Iraola Backs Wirtz and Barcola Amid Criticism
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola is standing firm in his belief that both Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola can deliver, insisting he has '100 per cent' trust in the duo despite their hefty price tags. Wirtz, who arrived for £116 million, has had a full season to settle but has yet to justify his transfer fee. In the recent defeat to Manchester City, he struggled to make an impact, even when Liverpool looked promising early on. On the other hand, Barcola joined from PSG for £123 million and deserves a bit more patience after joining late in the transfer window. However, he has yet to find his footing in six appearances, leaving fans and pundits questioning his contributions. With injuries to key players like Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo, and Dominik Szoboszlai—who are the team's top scorers—there's now more pressure on Wirtz and Barcola to ignite Liverpool's attack. The upcoming Champions League clash against LASK is looming large, and Iraola is uncertain if his injured stars will return for subsequent matches against Brentford, Villarreal, and Brighton. "Cody, Alex, and Dom are crucial players for us, and we need others to step up in their absence," Iraola acknowledged. "Bradley and Flo have experienced ups and downs, just like the rest of the squad, but I believe they will come good." Despite the criticism, Iraola remains optimistic about Wirtz's capabilities. While he didn’t shine in the last match, the manager pointed to his international form as a silver lining. "He scored for Germany recently, and even though he has faced challenges here, I see potential in both him and Barcola to contribute positively," he added. The upcoming match in Linz marks just one of six fixtures in the next 18 days, and Iraola hinted at making some changes to his lineup for freshness. Jamie Carragher voiced his concerns following the defeat to City, stating, "Wirtz isn’t working out, and Gravenberch shouldn’t be on the bench while he’s playing. Barcola needs time, but Wirtz must step up. He hasn’t been a game-changer yet." Others, like Callum Bishop from Sky Sports, compared Wirtz's slow start to the immediately impactful beginnings of players like Kevin De Bruyne. While defenders of Wirtz point out that success relies on the entire team, his stats have fallen short of expectations, particularly when compared to other rising stars in the league. The pressure is on as Liverpool looks to find its rhythm, and Wirtz and Barcola are now in the spotlight to deliver the performances that fans and analysts alike have been waiting for.
