Lille Eye Legal Action After Tiago Santos Suffers Serious Knee Injury
Lille OSC is weighing the possibility of legal action after defender Tiago Santos sustained a significant knee injury from what the club describes as an "uncontrolled and dangerous" tackle during Saturday's match against Le Havre.
The 24-year-old was carried off the pitch on a stretcher, having ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and also suffering a meniscal tear in his right knee. The incident occurred in the first half of Lille's narrow 1-0 victory, when Le Havre midfielder Amir Richardson tackled Santos. Although the referee called a foul, Richardson avoided any cards for the challenge.
Lille has formally requested that the league investigate the tackle, asserting that it should have warranted a red card due to its dangerous nature, being made "from behind and in an uncontrolled manner." In their statement, the club voiced concerns not only over Santos's injury but also about the referee's handling of the situation.
"The circumstances of the injury and the absence of a sanction raise significant questions for us," Lille's statement continued. They have also reached out to both the French Football Federation and the Professional Football League to review how the incident was managed by the match officials and the video assistant referee.
Looking ahead, Lille is exploring potential legal remedies and reserves the right to seek compensation for the damages incurred due to Santos's injury. Unfortunately for the club, Santos will be sidelined for several months as he recovers.
In response, Le Havre expressed their support for Santos's recovery but stood by the referee's decision, questioning Lille's choice to pursue further action against Richardson after the match. "HAC respects all fellow Ligue 1 clubs and expects the same respect in return," they added.
As Lille sits second in Ligue 1, they are also preparing for an upcoming Champions League clash against Arsenal on Tuesday.
