Lyon Edges Out Crystal Palace in Thrilling Europa League Clash
In a gripping Europa League encounter, Lyon outlasted Crystal Palace with a 3-2 victory, leaving Palace manager Pierre Sage to reflect on a disappointing return to his former club.
Lyon surged ahead with a two-goal cushion, courtesy of Corentin Tolisso and Ernest Nuamah, who struck either side of halftime. The Eagles struggled to find their rhythm, failing to register a single shot on target in the first half, leaving them looking for answers.
Sage, who was dismissed by Lyon in January 2025, saw his side ignite in the second half. Yeremy Pino found the net early after the break, connecting perfectly with a pass from Adam Wharton to make it 2-1 and give Palace a glimmer of hope.
However, Lyon responded swiftly, with Pavel Sulc redirecting Keito Nakamura's shot to restore their two-goal lead, seemingly dashing Palace's hopes of a comeback. Although Daichi Kamada pulled one back late in the match, it wasn't enough to salvage a point.
The defeat stings, especially given that Lyon was the team that knocked Palace out of the Europa League last season due to ownership connections. Now, the Eagles must regroup and prepare for a crucial clash against Brighton this Sunday, followed by a challenging away fixture against Besiktas.
The match unfolded with Lyon's first goal coming from Tolisso, who capitalized on Palace's defensive lapse after a corner. Just before halftime, Nuamah doubled the lead, leaving Palace in a precarious position.
Pino's strike reignited hopes for the Eagles, but their efforts were undermined by defensive frailties. Kamada's late goal offered a flicker of optimism, but ultimately, Palace left Lyon empty-handed.
Sage expressed his frustration post-match, stating, "It's a very disappointing return because we lost. I can't take satisfaction from coming back home or seeing familiar faces when the result isn't there. The scoreline may have been close, but there was a big difference in the way the two teams played."
Sky Sports commentator Patrick Rowe echoed Sage's sentiments, noting, "Crystal Palace fell behind early and the first half was a timid affair. The improvement after halftime was evident, but that third goal from Lyon always seemed like a bridge too far."
With a glaring vulnerability from set pieces, having conceded 35 goals in such situations since the start of last season, Palace has much to address under Sage's new era. They must tighten up defensively if they hope to build momentum moving forward.
