Matildas Face Setback as Mary Fowler Withdraws from Friendlies
Mary Fowler will sit out the Matildas’ upcoming friendlies against Germany and Haiti due to personal circumstances.
Football Australia announced the news on Tuesday, revealing that Leah Davidson, a midfielder from Charlton, has been brought into the squad to fill the gap left by Fowler.
In an official statement, Football Australia explained, "Mary Fowler has been withdrawn from the October international window due to personal circumstances. This decision came after discussions involving Fowler, Manchester City, and Matildas staff."
This is a significant loss for coach Joe Montemurro, who was counting on Fowler's creativity and attacking prowess in these vital matches.
The 23-year-old has been enjoying a stellar run at Manchester City and would have been pivotal for Australia as they gear up for the World Cup.
Adding to the challenges, the Matildas will also be missing star midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross during this international window.
Fowler’s partner, Nathan Cleary, an NRL player, is currently recovering from surgery after a serious ankle injury sustained in a recent match. He also had an operation for a stress fracture in his foot and is expected to face a long recovery period.
The friendlies against Germany, ranked third in the world, and Haiti, ranked 47th, are crucial for the Matildas' preparations ahead of next year’s World Cup.
Montemurro is eager to test his squad against a diverse range of opponents, with Germany providing a formidable challenge and Haiti boasting talents like Melchie Dumornay, a standout player who previously played alongside Ellie Carpenter at Lyon.
Davidson, 25, has earned her call-up after making the move to Charlton in the English top flight from Melbourne City. She has four caps and one goal since her debut in 2004.
Notably, every player in the squad, except for Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Courtney Newbon, plays overseas. Newbon, along with Hana Lowry and Tori Tumeth, represents the only uncapped players in the team.
