Parkinson: Wrexham Shuts Out Doubts with Dominant Win Over Preston
Wrexham celebrated a much-needed home victory against Preston North End, securing a 4-1 triumph at the Racecourse. Manager Phil Parkinson highlighted the importance of tuning out external criticism as the team rebounded from their disappointing loss to West Bromwich Albion earlier in the week. After facing scrutiny for a slow start to the season, Parkinson acknowledged the mounting pressure but insisted he’s familiar with the challenges of management. "I have managed over 1,000 games so I'm used to that," he shared with BBC Radio Wales Sport. He continued, "When you lose at any level, the criticism falls on the manager and players alike, and that's something you've got to take in stride. The profile of Wrexham amplifies this scrutiny, of course." The match saw first goals for the club from Joe Worrall and Ben Whiteman, allowing Wrexham to take a 2-1 lead by halftime. In the second half, Sam Smith and Kieffer Moore added to the scoreline, sealing an emphatic victory against the league's bottom team. "We were eager to get back out there today," Parkinson said, conveying the team's determination. "I see this as a challenge. Steve [Parkin] and I were excited to regroup with the lads on Thursday and strengthen our unity." The manager reflected on their tactical choices, stating, "We carefully considered team selection and the style of play we needed. Sometimes, you just have to shut out the noise and deliver a performance like we did today. I firmly believe we have a squad capable of competing this season." Parkinson also pointed to a long injury list as a significant reason for Wrexham's rocky start, with key players like Max Cleworth, Nathan Broadhead, and Dan Sheaf currently unavailable. "I don’t want to dwell on the injuries, but it’s been a tough period—probably the worst we’ve faced during my time here. We’ve lost a lot of quality on the pitch, but those players will return, and it will create healthy competition for places. I truly believe in this group." In the meantime, he emphasized the importance of rallying the squad and finding ways to enhance their effectiveness until the injured players are back.
