Ronaldo's Return to Portugal Still Possible, Says Boss Jesus
Cristiano Ronaldo's last appearance for Portugal came during a match against Wales in Lisbon, but his journey with the national team may not be over just yet. Coach Jorge Jesus has stated that the door is still open for the iconic forward to return whenever he decides.
The 41-year-old captain departed the Nations League camp after being left on the bench for the game against Norway, and later learning he wouldn’t start against Denmark. Ronaldo, who currently plays for Al-Nassr, boasts an impressive record of 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, both of which are world records.
In a social media post after leaving the camp, Ronaldo hinted at sharing his reasons for his departure, stating, "In due course, I will tell the truth to all the Portuguese people about my reasons for leaving the national team, to which I have always been dedicated."
Jesus, who has also coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, maintained that he would address the situation after Portugal's final Nations League match against Norway, where they secured a 2-1 victory and a spot in the quarter-finals.
“If he wants to, he'll return to the national team,” Jesus remarked. “We can have a conversation before the next call-up, but ultimately, it's up to Cris to decide. He should conclude his international career on his own terms.”
Portugal is set to face Denmark on November 14, followed by a match against Wales three days later. Ronaldo had previously started in the opening win against Wales but was benched for the game in Norway, where he reportedly expressed frustration over being asked to warm up without being brought on.
This marked the first time since 2008 that the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was an unused substitute in a competitive match for his country.
When Jesus announced Ronaldo would not start against Denmark either, the legendary forward opted to leave the camp. Meanwhile, AC Milan striker Goncalo Ramos has made a significant impact, scoring in all three matches Ronaldo has missed.
After their victory over Norway, Joao Cancelo praised Ronaldo, saying, "Cristiano is our captain, the best player Portugal has ever had. Things will certainly end in the best way with him, but the important thing is the four victories."
Teammate Nuno Mendes echoed this sentiment, welcoming any player back to the national team, adding, "If Cris returns, we'll be here to receive him with open arms."
Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, has been instrumental in Portugal's success, helping them clinch the Euro 2016 title and two Nations League trophies.
