Scotland Dominates North Macedonia as Bowie Shines Under Pocognoli
Scotland knew they had to deliver, and they did just that. Kieron Bowie kicked things off with a stunning goal in the seventh minute against a North Macedonia team struggling on multiple fronts. This strike marked the first goal for manager Sébastien Pocognoli, who later celebrated his inaugural win. Anything less against such a lackluster opponent would have been a major embarrassment for the Scots.
John McGinn added his 22nd international goal from the penalty spot, reflecting Scotland's overall dominance. The only blemish on the night was Scott McKenna's late red card and the missed chances that could have pushed the score to three or four. Nevertheless, Scotland remains in contention in Nations League section B1, knowing tougher tests lie ahead. They approached this match with the professionalism it required.
It was a special night for Andy Robertson, who celebrated his 100th cap. Early on, he seemed inspired to silence his critics, charging forward with purpose. Just five minutes in, he forced a brilliant save from Stole Dimitrievski. McGinn, also under scrutiny, responded strongly, matching Robertson's intensity.
However, it was Bowie who gave Scotland the crucial early advantage. After being substituted during Tuesday's loss to Switzerland due to Jack Hendry's red card, Pocognoli kept faith in Bowie. The forward showcased his talent by collecting Billy Gilmour’s pass, evading defenders, and unleashing a fantastic left-footed strike past a helpless Dimitrievski.
Scotland had chances to double their lead, with McGinn delivering a brilliant pass to Robertson, who opted to shoot but missed when a simple layoff to Oli McBurnie was the better choice. As Bowie and Ben Gannon-Doak squandered further opportunities, North Macedonia made two substitutions within the first half-hour.
The Scots were not ruthless enough, a concern that lingered as Gannon-Doak missed a clear chance shortly after halftime. He thought he earned a penalty, but VAR correctly ruled he had stepped on Matej Gashtarov's foot. North Macedonia was under heavy pressure, with Bowie putting Dimitrievski to the test again.
Scotland finally got a break from the officials. A foul against McKenna was reversed, and shortly after, Bojan Miovski was penalized for blocking Bowie's shot with his arm. McGinn stepped up to convert the penalty, sealing the win. Only three players have scored more goals for Scotland than the Aston Villa midfielder.
Ryan Christie’s introduction at halftime brought added flair and creativity to the midfield, making him a likely starter for the upcoming match against Slovenia. Meanwhile, Angus Gunn, who had faced scrutiny before the match, had little to do throughout the game.
Unfortunately for McKenna, he will miss the Slovenia game after a foul on Agon Elezi, which was deemed a clear denial of a goal-scoring chance. Robertson later took responsibility for the incident and offered an apology to his teammate.
Reflecting on his milestone, Robertson said, "It means everything to me and my family. It has been an unbelievable journey. It is emotional for me because I love this country and this is a special achievement. I believe I still have a lot to give."
Pocognoli was relieved that Scotland managed to secure the win even with ten men. McGinn almost added a second goal in stoppage time. Meanwhile, North Macedonia continues to struggle, now going seven games without finding the net.
