Scotland Shines in Skopje: Pocognoli's First Victory and Robertson's Milestone
Scotland emerged victorious against North Macedonia with a 2-0 scoreline in Skopje, giving Sebastien Pocognoli his first win as head coach. Meanwhile, Andy Robertson celebrated a significant milestone, becoming only the second player in Scotland's history to reach 100 caps.
Despite the pressure following two consecutive draws in the Nations League, Pocognoli's side delivered a commanding performance. The team showcased their resilience, even finishing the match with ten men after Scott McKenna received a straight red card.
Kieron Bowie broke the deadlock, firing home his first international goal after a long drought for the team that lasted over 420 minutes. Before that, Robertson had missed a couple of golden opportunities but was instrumental in the build-up play.
A moment of levity interrupted the match when a dog made an unexpected appearance on the pitch. Once play resumed, Scotland continued to assert their dominance with several near misses from Bowie, Robertson, and Ben Gannon-Doak.
After the break, Scotland was awarded a penalty when Gannon-Doak was brought down, but the referee reversed the decision after reviewing the footage. Shortly after, however, another penalty was given when Bojan Miovski handled a rebound from Bowie's shot following a McKenna effort that hit the post.
John McGinn, whose future with the national team had been questioned, stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way and putting Scotland two goals ahead. This marked his 27th goal for his country.
As Scotland seemed to be in control, the match took a turn when McKenna was sent off late in the game for a challenge on Agon Elezi, mirroring Jack Hendry's dismissal from the previous match.
Next up, Scotland will host Slovenia at Hampden Park, looking to build on this positive result during this extended international break.
Pocognoli reflected on the win, expressing his relief and satisfaction with the team's performance after their previous struggles. He noted that they looked more like the squad that impressed in their prior outing against Slovenia.
Bowie was a standout player, demonstrating his potential, while new call-ups Stephen Welsh and Luis Binks also made a positive impact. However, the concern remains about finishing matches with ten men, as this has happened in their last two games.
In a heartfelt moment, Andy Robertson shared his thoughts on reaching 100 caps, stating, "It means everything to me, it means everything to my family. I've been away now 100 times; I've got to feel sorry for my wife! It's been an unbelievable journey."
He added a touch of humor about his early shooting spree, joking that he thought Kenny Dalglish might worry about his goalscoring record after he fired off several attempts. On McKenna's red card, Robertson took responsibility for the pass that led to the sending off, praising his teammates for their resilience in defending their lead.
Pocognoli concluded that while this win is a significant step forward, there's still much work to be done as they prepare for their next challenge.
