Scott Shines as England Midfield Competition Heats Up
Thomas Tuchel has made it clear that competition is heating up for Declan Rice’s position in England’s midfield, especially after Alex Scott’s impressive showing in the recent 7-0 rout of Croatia. Scott, who was making his first international start, showcased his talent with a display full of energy and skill.
Rice, dealing with neural pain in his upper hamstring, had to pull out of the camp for load management. His absence during the Nations League campaign has opened the door for Tuchel to explore new options alongside Elliot Anderson in midfield.
The England head coach has infused youth into the squad and has been pleased with the rivalry between Scott and Myles Lewis-Skelly over the past two weeks. While Lewis-Skelly held his own in matches against Spain and Czechia, it was Scott who truly shone in Croatia, creating a dynamic partnership with Anderson.
This was only Scott’s second cap, but he had already made an impact in Prague against Czechia. His performance was one of the many highlights for Tuchel, who senses a revitalized England after the heartbreak of the World Cup defeat to Argentina. It’s telling that when asked about Jordan Pickford's status as the No. 1 goalkeeper, Tuchel casually pointed out that Rice’s spot isn’t guaranteed either.
While Rice has been a key player for England, helping them reach two major finals, Tuchel emphasized the need for competition. "Of course, he knows his place is under threat after a performance like that," Tuchel remarked. "We can't rely on just two central midfielders. The more quality options we have, the better we’ll be. Alex was at the highest level today."
Scott and Anderson didn’t just outperform their Croatian counterparts; they dominated seasoned players like Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic. Having previously played together when Lee Carsley’s under-21 squad triumphed in the European Championship, their chemistry was evident.
"It helps a lot, not just as players but in terms of character," Tuchel noted. "They’re a great mix. Alex had a fantastic match, and we need that strength in the midfield. I’m thrilled with how Alex has trained."
Scott spoke highly of his partnership with Anderson. "We really complement each other well," he said. "We’ve talked about playing together since the Euros last year. I love having him next to me. He makes everything easier, and we’re both aggressive in our play. It’s fantastic to work together."
It’s no surprise Bournemouth fought to keep Scott last summer after interest from Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea. Tuchel regards him as one of England’s top midfield talents, leading many to believe that not including him in the World Cup squad was a misstep. England often lacked depth behind Anderson and Rice, who had logged a staggering 69 appearances last season.
Scott, undeterred by his World Cup disappointment, used it as motivation. "It made me hungrier, but there are so many outstanding players in this country," he reflected. "I had no hard feelings about not going. I focused on learning during the prep camp, and that helped me here."
With this win in Croatia, England remains in second place in their Nations League group, just three points behind Spain and well-positioned for a quarter-final spot in March. The upcoming match against Czechia will see Harry Kane aiming to equal Peter Shilton’s record of 125 caps, and he’s been in exceptional form alongside Jude Bellingham.
Tuchel noted, "They’re improving all the time. They enjoy playing together and understand each other better."
As he considers rotations for the Czechia match, Tuchel is keen to evaluate his squad further. New addition Rico Lewis from Manchester City has been called up, and there’s plenty of competition for spots. "The attitude from the bench is great. Morgan Gibbs-White has had a fantastic training week, and Eberechi Eze is pushing hard. We need this kind of depth."
