Ronaldo's National Team Drama: Suspension After Walkout Sparks Controversy

Ronaldo's National Team Drama: Suspension After Walkout Sparks Controversy
Cristiano Ronaldo has found himself in hot water with the Portugal national team after walking out in protest against coach Jorge Jesus. The incident unfolded after Ronaldo was left on the bench during the 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway on September 27. The 41-year-old forward, who boasts an impressive record of 146 goals in 234 appearances for his country, didn’t hold back. In a nearly 2,000-word statement, he accused Jesus of breaching their agreement regarding his playing time, declaring the situation as a 'breach of trust.' The Portuguese Football Federation reacted swiftly, announcing disciplinary procedures against Ronaldo on October 9. As reported by Lisbon’s A Bola, the federation stated, "Disciplinary proceedings were initiated to determine the potential relevance of the reported events." They also confirmed a preventive suspension for Ronaldo until the investigation concludes. As a result, Ronaldo missed Portugal's next two matches against Denmark and Norway, both wins that put the team at the top of Group A4. This absence has led to growing speculation about the future of his international career. After Portugal's win against Norway, Jesus indicated that a return to the squad could still be possible for Ronaldo, saying, "If he wants to, he'll return to the national team." Despite his frustrations, Ronaldo expressed regret for his actions and asked the federation to impose appropriate penalties without leniency. Following the walkout, Ronaldo returned to his club, Al Nassr, and scored in his first game back. Tensions between him and Jesus have been a topic of conversation, especially as the coach previously denied any rift between them. In his lengthy Instagram post, Ronaldo stated, "If I am physically well, I will always be available to compete for our national team after serving any suspension." He revealed that Jesus had promised him 30 minutes of playtime against Norway, only to go back on that commitment. "I warmed up from half-time onwards and watched the minutes tick by without being called on," Ronaldo lamented. He accused the coach of breaking his word, leading him to leave the training camp in frustration. Public sentiment in Portugal seems to lean in favor of Jesus, according to recent polls, as fans rally behind the coach amidst the fallout. The two men did have a meeting, along with Al Nassr's sporting director, Simao Coutinho, but Ronaldo felt that the public statement from Jesus didn’t accurately reflect their private discussions. Ronaldo expressed disappointment over the coach's aggressive tone, which he felt was unwarranted. He noted this wasn’t the first time Jesus had let him down, prompting his decision to exit the camp. In previous comments, Ronaldo had hinted at considering retirement from international football after the World Cup. He revealed that he had drafted a retirement statement but was persuaded against it by the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proenca, during a flight back from North America. Ronaldo also shared that he supported Jesus's appointment as head coach, believing it was the right choice considering the results the team has achieved since.
